"Put simply, Dr Gopal could have been both substandard as a GP and still have carried out the vaginal examination for a sexual, non-medical purpose," Crown prosecutor Lesley Taylor said.

Defence barrister Michael Tovey said Dr Gopal, who suffered from an obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety, had been seen to have "shaking hands in respect of ear procedures, eye procedures, suturing and shaking generally; that he was clumsy and awkward, and that must affect his physical examinations".
